Our Approach
Chere Thomas is a Level 2 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher, is certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT) and is a Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT500) with Yoga Alliance.
Chere began yoga through the advice of a physical therapist to aid the healing of chronic neck, hip and lower back injuries due to a lifetime of competitive sports. After practicing various methods of yoga and continuing to suffer severe chronic pain, she began an Iyengar Yoga practice that changed her life.
Being drawn to the attention to detail, precision and philosophy the Iyengar Yoga method offers, she completed over 600 hours B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga teacher training (one year with Eddy Marks and Mary Obendorfer, followed by an extensive 3-year Teacher Training Program under the guidance of Gloria Goldberg, Carolyn Belko and Manouso Manos), plus over 5 years apprenticeship under the direction of senior Iyengar Yoga teachers (3 years with Eddy Marks, followed by 2 years with Gloria Goldberg), and she has traveled four times to Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family at the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Memorial Institute (RIMYI). She continues to study regularly with Gloria and studies yoga philosophy regularly with Gitte Bechsgaard, PhD,
In 2013, 10-weeks post rotator cuff repair surgery Chere attended medical classes at RIMYI as a student patient under the direction of BKS "Guruji" Iyengar and Geeta Iyengar which has given her an insight to yoga modifications for shoulder injuries and recovery. She has completed over 200 hours of Iyengar Yoga therapy training, assisted in weekly Iyengar Yoga therapy classes with Gloria Goldberg and continues ongoing Iyengar Yoga therapy training with Gloria.
It is with the greatest honor and respect that Chere acknowledges and thanks BKS Iyengar for his devoted lifetime of practice, knowledge and wisdom which he shared through his writings and teachings, the entire Iyengar family for carrying on Guruji's legacy, the many Senior CIYTs who compassionately share their knowledge, and Iyengar Yoga peers and students who have generously shared with her their time on the mat.
